Producer / writer/ MC / drummer / DJ J-Zone returns to the fold with Backyard Breaks, a follow-up to his debut drum break LP, 2014’s Lunch Breaks. This 18-cut offering continues where its predecessor left off, but offers more variety in a smaller package. Where Lunch Breaks channeled the drum mojo of the late 1960s exclusively, Backyard Breaks explores a wider sonic timeline of drumming and recording. The late 1960s approach is revisited often, but this sophomore effort also captures the tighter, punchier and more focused sounds of the mid and late 1970s, as well as some of the less orthodox rhythms and fills from those eras, giving the sampling producer a mixture of sounds to work with. Percussionist Ray May adds congas to a handful of tracks to mix things up and capture the b-boy spirit, while more options in the way of mikes, drum kits, snares and cymbals – in addition to more head room with the recording levels for more producer control - make Backyard Breaks a well-rounded follow-up to its predecessor.
Between the recording of Lunch Breaks and Backyard Breaks, J-Zone has done studio drumming and sample replays for Danger Mouse, Marco Polo, RA the Rugged Man, Apathy and many others, as well as providing drum tracks for film scores like CNN’s Fresh Dressed and the Stretch and Bobbito Documentary. Meeting the demands of producers and musicians, constructive feedback from Lunch Breaks and continuous research and practice have all aided J-Zone in presenting a more useful and versatile break record for producers looking for a classic break beat sound.

As I approach my 10th year playing drums next week, I’m very fortunate to work with the level of musicians I’ve been able to this early on. Nothing taken for granted! Dig.

A warm-up routine I use sometimes. It ain’t perfect. Some of the small nuances/details are there and some are my own. And obviously the drum sounds on the originals are all different. It's just meant to be a homage to great breaks and a fun exercise to get my brain going with beats we all know that have different feels and tempos. Come up with your own 9!

About "36 Breakbeats": 

Over the years I’ve posted my drum covers of classic breakbeats, iconic funk grooves and even those same breaks altered when they were sampled in various hip-hop records. Mostly on IG for fun and to show love to the pioneering drummers who’ve inspired me to play. I compiled my faves - some of ‘em never made it off my desktop and others I had to re-film for this -  in a mixtape/highlight reel format as smoothly as I could. These go back as far as 2020. Yes, I KNOW there are classics missing - it ain’t a definitive showcase of the most common breakbeats. Just 36 grooves that were part of my drumming education. And yes, I chose 36 as a subtle Wu-Tang reference. Enjoy!
